To enter the fortress, you must pass through seven gates, each bearing marks from past battles.
At the second gate, you can still see the scars of cannonball attacks from Jaipur’s army. One of the gates, Jaipol, is the “Victory Gate” and was built by Maharaja Man Singh to commemorate his victory over the Jaipur and Bikaner armies. Another gate, Fatehpol, also known as the “Gate of Victory,” was constructed by Maharaja Ajit Singh to celebrate his triumph over the Mughals. Inside the fort, you’ll find beautiful palaces such as Moti Mahal (Pearl Palace), where you can see the royal throne of Jodhpur, as well as large courtyards, art galleries, temples, and more.
Next, visit the Umaid Bhawan Palace, built by Maharaja Umaid Singh between 1929 and 1943, originally to provide employment to thousands of people during a famine. It is believed that the Buddha founded Buddhism here around 528 BC, when he gave his first sermon, “The Turning of the Wheel of Dharma,” in Sarnath. The famous Chinese traveler Xuanzang, also known as Hiuen Tsiang, visited the city around 635 AD, noting that it was a hub of religious and artistic activity, extending about 5 kilometers along the western bank of the Ganges.
